While Beijing has offered few details on the agenda for the two-day state visit to Moscow by China’s leader, Xi Jinping, Russia has shared some information about the agenda.
Mr. Xi arrived in Moscow at 12:59 local time (5:59 a.m. Eastern) on Monday, the Russian state news agency Tass reported. A military band was waiting on the tarmac to greet him.
President Vladimir V. Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri V. Ushakov, said that key negotiations would take place on Tuesday, telling reporters last week: “The visit is called a state visit in order to emphasize its importance.”
Here’s a look at what is on the schedule:
Monday
Mr. Putin and Mr. Xi will have a “tête-à-tête bilateral meeting” in the afternoon, according to Mr. Ushakov. The “informal closed conversation,” he said, will cover the most important and sensitive issues — including international affairs.
“Of course, the conflict in Ukraine will be discussed,” Mr. Ushakov said, adding that it was possible the two leaders might “say a couple of words” to the press before their meeting and lunch.
Tuesday
Mr. Xi will attend a morning meeting with Russia’s prime minister, Mikhail Mishustin, and then will participate in lengthy afternoon talks.
Delegations from Russia and China will meet for negotiations before being joined by Mr. Xi and Mr. Putin, according to Mr. Ushakov. He said that “negotiations will be held first in a smaller format, then in an expanded format” before the two leaders sign documents and address the media.
In the evening, Mr. Xi will be treated to a state dinner in the 15th-century Granovitaya Palata, or Faceted Chamber, of the Kremlin Palace. The Kremlin did not provide details on other attendees, saying only that those invited were “related to the development of bilateral ties.”
