Economists Tally Results of Decade of Chinese Investment in Pakistan

islamabad —  The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Beijing’s massive investment plan to boost trade and economic ties with Pakistan, is 10 years old but has not fulfilled its lofty goals. CPEC became an early example of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, an aggressive effort to build billions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure in Asia and beyond. At its inception, CPEC was China’s most ambitious BRI effort: More than $35 billion was pledged for energy projects and another $10 billion for transportation. Speaking this month at a commemoration of the project’s 10th…

Japan Signs Chip Development Deal With India

washington —  Japan and India have signed an agreement for the joint development of semiconductors, in what appears to be another indication of how global businesses are reconfiguring post-pandemic supply chains as China loses its allure for foreign companies. India’s Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister for railways, communications, and electronics and information technology, and Japan’s minister of economy, trade and industry, Yasutoshi Nishimura, signed the deal Thursday in New Delhi. The memorandum covers “semiconductor design, manufacturing, equipment research, talent development and [will] bring resilience in the semiconductor supply chain,” Vaishnaw said. Nishimura…

Extension of China-Pakistan Corridor to Afghanistan Presents Challenges

India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesman, Arindam Bagchi, said Thursday that Taiwan’s plans to open the Mumbai center should be seen in the context of India’s policy, which “facilitates, promotes interactions with Taiwan…

The world’s two largest economies – the United States and China – must work together to fight the “existential threat” of global warming, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Saturday in Beijing at meeting with Chinese government officials and climate experts. “As the world’s two largest emitters of greenhouse gases and the largest investors in renewable energy, we have both a joint responsibility and ability to lead the way,” Yellen said. Yellen said “climate finance should be targeted efficiently and effectively” to support already established institutions like the Green Climate…

Security Concerns, Payment Disputes Hinder China’s BRI Investment in Pakistan

This week, China and Pakistan are marking 10 years of economic collaboration through Beijing’s global Belt and Road Initiative. But the growing terrorist risk to Chinese citizens in the South Asian nation and differences over debt repayments now hinder progress in the joint infrastructure development program, according to officials and critics. The multibillion-dollar program, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, or CPEC, was introduced in 2013 and quickly dubbed the flagship extension of the BRI — with expectations it would transform Pakistan into a regional hub for economic connectivity. The investment has…
