China’s Xi Jinping says major powers must set example amid world’s ‘risks and challenges’

Chinese President Xi Jinping said that major powers must set an example as the world faced “multiple risks and challenges”, during a meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in Beijing on Tuesday.
“Major powers in particular must take the lead in promoting equality, rule of law, cooperation and integrity,” Xi said, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

“China and Europe are partners, not rivals, with cooperation outweighing competition and consensus greater than differences,” he added.

Orpo is the second European Union leader to visit China in three weeks, following Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin’s trip in early January, and comes about a month ahead of a planned visit by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

US President Donald Trump’s censure of long-standing Nato allies and his stated wish of acquiring Greenland from Denmark have exacerbated divisions within the transatlantic security alliance.
