The US and China held “very constructive” talks in Sweden but any extension of their truce in the trade war would need Donald Trump’s approval, Treasury secretary Scott Bessent said in Sweden on Tuesday.
Bessent and US trade representative Jamieson Greer would fly back to Washington to discuss the matter with Trump in the Oval Office on Wednesday, the Treasury secretary added.
The president indicated to journalists aboard Air Force One on his return from Scotland on Tuesday that he had not yet made a decision on whether to pause a new round of tariffs on China ahead of his own August 12 deadline for a deal.
“We’ll either approve it or not,” Trump said.
