2 boats capsize in heavy rain in southwest China, dozens plunged into river

Two tour boats capsized on a river in the southwestern Chinese province of Guizhou on Sunday afternoon, state news agency Xinhua reported, without detailing casualties.

About 70 people, including crew members, were plunged into the water near the Dongfeng Reservoir as heavy rainfall hit the Liuchong River, a tributary of the Wu River, at around 4pm.

By 7pm, more than 50 people had been pulled from the water, Xinhua reported, adding that rescue efforts were continuing.

Citing local authorities, The Beijing News said casualty numbers were still being tallied.

A tourist on a boat that did not capsize told The Beijing News that there was a sudden change in weather, including heavy rain and a mist on the surface of the water.

The China Meteorological Administration said earlier on Sunday that heavy downpours were forecast for southwestern and southern parts of China, including Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

The incident occurred during the five-day May Day holiday, which ends on Monday.
