The Chinese leadership’s renewed emphasis on accelerating Shanghai’s emergence as a global financial centre reaffirms Beijing’s commitment to the long-standing vision as rising tensions with the United States pose potential financial risks, analysts said. Advertisement During a symposium in Shanghai, Vice-Premier He Lifeng called on Tuesday for efforts to speed up the city’s development as a global financial centre. He was accompanying President Xi Jinping on the Chinese leader’s first inspection tour since sweeping US tariffs escalated a trade war. “There have been precedents of vice-premiers in charge of financial…

China says US wants trade talks, Beijing open to discussions
BANGKOK – The United States has approached Beijing for talks to defuse an escalating trade war, the Chinese commerce ministry said Friday, in a possible sign of progress toward ending a tit-for-tat tariff battle that threatens global economic growth. The ministry said China is open to talks and urged Washington to correct its “erroneous” practices and cancel tariffs, the state-controlled Global Times reported. “We will fight, if fight we must,” a commerce ministry spokesperson said, according to the report. “Our doors are open, if the U.S. wants to talk.” U.S.…

Trump tariffs cut deep into India’s diamond industry
Seated before a pile of rough diamonds laid out on a faded velvet tray, Kalpesh Mangukiya said his cutting and polishing business in the Indian city of Surat was struggling even before Donald Trump’s trade war deepened his woes. The owner of Kushal Gems had already been forced to lay off a quarter of his staff as revenue more than halved due in part to western sanctions on Russian diamonds. Ebbing demand from the US and China, the world’s biggest diamond markets, amid competition from cheaper lab-grown gems has been…
The US is fixated on ‘beating China’. It needs to stop beating itself

Advertisement Without these, a stronger opponent will inevitably lose to a weaker foe who possesses them. This is the immutable law of war. A month into Donald Trump’s global tariff war, even the president’s closest associates have struggled to agree on or articulate a coherent purpose, goal or strategy for Washington to prevail in…
