For first time, Taiwanese experts will join US-Japanese war games simulating cross-strait clash

“Participants are also expected to analyse military scenarios in the Taiwan Strait and East and South China seas and come up with proposals on how the ‘blue team’ could deal with the threats from the ‘red team’,” Su said, referring to the joint US-Japanese-Taiwanese forces and the PLA respectively.

He declined to reveal more details about the event but said this type of simulation typically ran for two to three days, beginning with general discussions of the rules, followed by three rounds of projections about the final results.

“The simulations do not necessarily mean that war would come soon, but rather they are risk management. They also carry a message to Beijing that war is disastrous and all parties must be rational in dealing with it,” Su said.

Recent tabletop war games conducted by US and Japanese think tanks have shown that a cross-strait conflict would be catastrophic.

Earlier this year, Japan’s Sasakawa Peace Foundation conducted four days of tabletop war games simulating US and Japanese involvement in a cross-strait conflict.
