Chinese envoy warns against allowing differences to ‘hijack’ ties

Daniel Hurst
China’s ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, has warned against allowing differences between the two countries to “hijack” the overall relationship.
Addressing the media at the Chinese embassy in Canberra, he said 2022 had been an “extraordinary” year for the relationship between China and Australia. The change of government had provided an opportunity for a reset, he said.
Xiao said both sides considered the relationship to be a comprehensive strategic partnership.
Differences and disputes remained, he said, but both sides had agreed to address those in a constructive manner “not allow the differences to hijack” the overall relationship between the two countries.
Xiao cited climate change and green energy as a strong potential for cooperation between China and Australia.

On a lighter note, a newborn baby has been delivered on the side of Mitchell Freeway.
Eager to enter the world, her parents had to pull over to deliver the baby in the emergency lane.
The father, Courtney, told 6PR Breakfast that his wife and baby Macy are recovering well.
No one can prepare you for that – the missus water broke at home and we hustled our stuff together, threw her in the car – got onto the freeway and she just had this almighty contraction.
She said ‘I think it’s coming’ and I was like you’ll be alright and then I looked down and I could see the babies head looking at me.
Barbecue accident leaves NSW man with severe burns
A barbecue blaze has left a man with severe burns following a gas leak on the NSW Central Coast, AAP reports.
The 58-year-old man was grilling a steak in his backyard when a 9kg gas bottle came loose as he dialled up the heat on the barbecue. Escaping gas ignited and caused serious burns to his face and upper body.
Firefighters were able to control the blaze and placed the man under a shower until ambulance crews arrived.
The man was transferred by medical helicopter to the Royal North Shore hospital burns unit, where he was admitted in a stable condition.
The Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent, Adam Dewberry, said people should keep a constant supply of water on hand for emergencies when using their barbecue.
He also advised the public to regularly service their barbecues to prevent accidents.
NSW government urges Australians to celebrate 26 January
The NSW government promises a full-scale program for 26 January to entice Sydneysiders to celebrate Australia Day, AAP reports.
The environment minister, James Griffin, acknowledged the day represents mourning for First Nations people but urged communities to come together.
The celebrations will provide opportunities to reflect with optimism on our successful multicultural society and a bright future in New South Wales.
Truth-telling and reconciliation will be at the core of the celebrations, the Australia Day Council of NSW deputy chair, Yvonne Weldon, said.
It isn’t just about Australia Day.
It’s about what we do every other day in between.
What we’re doing through a truth telling is actually sharing our lived experience so we can truly understand what the date represents.

The Sydney Opera House sails will be illuminated with First Nations artwork as the Australian and Aboriginal flags are raised together. There will be the WugulOra morning ceremony at Barangaroo.
Throughout the day Sydney Harbour and the foreshore will be in the spotlight with a harbour parade, ferrython, tall ships race, salute to Australia and aerial defence force displays.
The day will end with a live concert at the Sydney Opera House forecourt.
The concert will be broadcast live on ABC TV and ABC iView from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

Penny Wong’s Beijing visit ‘went very successfully’, ambassador says
Xiao Qian also said Penny Wong’s visit to Beijing last month “went very successfully” and it was a “good meeting”.
It provides a roadmap for both sides to implement points of consensus reached, the Chinese ambassador said. The agreement was to restart dialogue in a range of key areas including trade and economic issues.
He said this year could be a “critical stage” for a turnaround, with the relationship potentially moving from stability to improvement.
He expressed confidence that China’s economy would grow this year. He said authorities had “refined” China’s Covid policy.

Nationwide shortage of common antibiotics
Children are bearing the brunt of a nationwide antibiotic shortage that doctors warn could lead to more hospitalisations. More than 300 medications are in short supply, particularly treatments for strep throat and liquid antibiotics used for children.
Adele Tahan from the Pharmacy Guild of Australia said shipmentsfrom overseas manufacturers had been held up.
Tahan told ABC radio this morning:
There are quite a significant number of antibiotics that are in short supply and they will remain so for quite some time.
Ninety per cent of Australian medications are from overseas.
The country faces a surge in children’s strep throat cases and pharmacists are being forced to give smaller or less-effective doses to patients. Tahan said:
I have been able to supply patients in a very small amount.
It’s quite serious when a patient, especially a child, requires a particular antibiotic with a particular dose for a specific infection.

Universities to return to ‘pen and paper’ exams after students caught using AI
Caitlin Cassidy is on the higher education round this year. This morning she has an interesting read about what Australian universities are doing about AI and how it fits into what is an international problem for the education sector:
Australian universities have been forced to change the way they run exams and other assessments amid fears students are using emerging artificial intelligence software to write essays.
Major institutions have added new rules which state that the use of AI is cheating, with some students already caught using the software. But one AI expert has warned universities are in an “arms race” they can never win.

Jetstar loses Denzel Curry’s luggage on rapper’s Australian tour
US rapper Denzel Curry has become an honorary Australian after partaking in what is becoming one of the nation’s more popular pastimes: sending angry tweets to Qantas.
The musician started a one-man crusade against Qantas yesterday after its budget airline Jetstar lost his bags on a flight, encouraging his followers to tweet at the company until his belongings are found.
EVERYONE TWEET AT @Qantas AND TELL THEM TO FIND MY BAG ASAP

He later wrote:

A Jetstar spokesperson wrote to Curry:
As this involved one of our flights last night, we wanted to let you know we’re urgently looking into this. Once your bag is located it will be delivered to you. We’re really sorry for what’s happened, please DM us if you need further help.
Guardian Australia has contacted Jetstar to see if Curry’s bags have been found.
Curry has been performing at various Australian festivals over the new year, including at Beyond the Valley in Victoria and Wildlands in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Chalmers says meeting with the ‘five finance ministers’ group’ will inform May budget
Hello from Canberra, where after another brief burst of winter-lite cool it has once again decided to be summer.
Jim Chalmers had his latest chat with his counterparts in Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US in what’s called the “five finance ministers’ group”. It’s not a very catchy name but, essentially, the group chat about inflation, recession risk, their own economies and supply chains. You know – fun stuff.
The idea is that everyone working together can help head off a global economic downturn. It’s not a new idea: these meetings happen regularly but Covid really spearheaded a new level of cooperation. And before that, it’s what the postwar economies did to try to foster agreement on how to move forward.
This time round it’s about keeping abreast of changes in local economies to see what that means domestically.
Chalmers released a statement:
This was a really valuable opportunity to discuss the current state of the international economy and look to how we can work together to respond to challenges.
While each of our nations enters 2023 from our own unique position, we all realise this year is going to be a very tough one for our economies and the global economy more broadly.
Each of our nations is affected by the slowdown in the international economy, the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, the impact of higher interest rates, and China’s transition from Covid zero that will likely add to the strain on global supply chains over coming months.
Here at home, our communities and economy are also particularly vulnerable to the increased severity and frequency of natural disasters – as we see in the current devastating floods in the Kimberley region.
Cooperation through the five finance ministers group is especially valuable given the uncertain global environment – the insights gleaned from engagements like this one will assist as we continue to prepare for the May budget over coming months.
