Rights activists and democracy campaigners outside China have come out in strong support of the “white paper” protest movement last weekend that was sparked by a fire in a locked-down apartment building in Xinjiang’s regional capital, Urumqi. The Nov. 24 fire left 10 dead and sparked protests across China over the weekend after video of the blaze went viral, with many people expressing condolences for the victims and calling for an end to ruling Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping’s zero-COVID policy of strict lockdowns, compulsory COVID-19 testing and mass…

Pentagon: China’s supply of nukes is rapidly rising
Beijing accelerated its nuclear weapons program last year and has nearly doubled its supply of warheads since 2020 to past 400, a size that U.S. military planners did not expect to see until about 2030, a new report from the Department of Defense says. The 2022 China Military Power Report, the latest edition of an annual report mandated by the U.S. Congress, says Pentagon planners in 2020 estimated China’s stockpile of warheads was in the “low-200s” and might double by the end of the decade. But a rapid expansion of…
Freed Myanmar Activist Mya Aye Describes Harrowing Imprisonment
Prominent Myanmar democracy activist Mya Aye, 56, was among the nearly 6,000 prisoners pardoned in a mass amnesty the ruling junta announced November 17. In an exclusive interview with VOA, he described his arrest and harrowing conditions of his imprisonment, including time in Myanmar’s notorious Insein prison. Mya Aye was arrested February 1, 2021, the day the military coup overthrew the democratic government. His release under the amnesty, coinciding with Myanmar National Day, was only two months away from his previously scheduled release date. He had, on the day of…
Sizewell C ‘confirmed’ again – this time it might be the real deal | Nils Pratley
Another day, another “confirmation” that the government plans to build the Sizewell C nuclear power plant in Suffolk – surely the “most announced” project in UK infrastructure history. The latest update, though, contained a genuine sign of seriousness: the Chinese are being paid to go away. China General Nuclear (CGN), a state-backed firm, owned a 20% stake in the fledgling project and had, in effect, a right to subscribe to maintain its holding through the various funding rounds – just as it did at Hinkley Point C in Somerset. In…
China plans ‘crackdown’ after Covid protests
The ruling Communist Party’s Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, which oversees domestic law enforcement across China, said it was “necessary to crack down on infiltration and sabotage activities by hostile forces in accordance with the law”. BBC
What China’s Covid Protesters Are Calling For
As he crossed a small road in Shanghai, the man held up a bundle of flowers and issued a rallying call to a crowd of excited onlookers. Within minutes, he was surrounded by security officials and wrestled into a police car. It was one of the more dramatic moments in several days of protests in China that captured the boldness of young Chinese demonstrators as well as the risks they face in challenging the country’s authoritarian leadership. The protests have been fueled by anger over an apartment building fire in…
China’s rights lawyers volunteer to help wave of lockdown protest detainees
Chinese human rights lawyers have been scrambling to assist the friends and families of people arrested during a wave of anti-lockdown protests over the weekend, many of whom have little experience being treated as dissidents by Chinese authorities. “So many people have been calling,” attorney Wang Shengsheng told RFA on Tuesday. “Our phones were blowing up because people had lost contact with their friends, and we found that people had been taken away in many different places, including Shanghai, Beijing, Ningbo, Kunming, Yunnan and Guizhou.” The rush of calls came…
Why Are Protesters in China Calling for Xi’s Resignation?
Outrage over strict COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in China has prompted rare protests across the country. Many say they are frustrated with the Communist Party and its leader, President Xi Jinping, over regular lockdowns as part of its “zero-COVID” policy. Some are going as far as calling for Xi to resign. VOA

U.K. Backs Giant Nuclear Plant, Squeezing Out China
The British government on Tuesday threw its weight behind nuclear power, saying it would back a major new generating plant on the coast of the North Sea northeast of London. The government said it would invest £700 million ($842 million) for a 50 percent stake in Sizewell C. EDF, the French state utility, which will construct the plant, will hold the rest. The deal squeezes out a Chinese state-owned company, China General Nuclear, which had owned 20 percent of the project. CGN received an undisclosed sum for its share, reflecting…
